I have read various topics here that mention the Regent in Vacoas. Can someone let me know what this was, a favourite watering spot I guess...  Smiley
Where was it located? I would like to find it and take a photo if this still exists.

Mike,
The Regent, as you guessed was a local watering hole. In 65-67 it was run/owned by a chinese/mauritian name Jean (John). It was a nice little bar (very few of them in those days) where you could get food and drink.
The best part - as us lowly sailors only got paid every 2 weeks, John would let you run up a bar tab until payday.
As for directions - the memory dims - and I've tried looking on Google Earth but everything looks so different now. Anyway as best as I remember you walked up the road past our Cinema/Badminton courts etc and past the SMF HQ on your right (possibly called Stevenson Rd). You eventually  reached a small roundabout and turned left into what we thought of as Vacoas high st. Then all along there to the next main roundabout/maybe crossroads. If you turned left here it took you back to Hms M's main gate, but instead you turned right and the Regent was a couple of buildings along on the right.  Shocked

Thanks for that information. I have located the area. The Regent has long gone and a shopping mall has been built on the site containing a supermarket, casino and several shops. However, they kept the name "The Regent" for the building and arcade. I shall be taking photos to upload to the website in the next days. Wink

'The 'Reej' was more or less opposite the Mandarin. You went through an archway and there was an open area in front of the bar. Did cheap grub as I recall and possibly home brewed 'whiters'
